What are important requirements for planning a building made of rammed earth?

A load-bearing rammed earth wall is statically calculated like an unreinforced brickwork and can be subjected to compressive forces. The wall thickness depends on the construction system and the building concept. Basically, one can assume a wall thickness of 35-40cm (excluding insulation level) for a 2-3 storey building.

Basically a distinction must be made between on-site production and prefabricated rammed earth elements. This decision is important for cost calculation and construction logistics.

03

How can rammed earth be integrated into a building as a building material?

Components which can be converted into rammed earth are manifold. You can integrate rammed earth in the form of wall sections, floor areas, wall panels, furniture-like counters, stairs, etc. in buildings.

What has to be considered for the implementation on a construction site?

With prefabricated building elements it is important to note that rammed earth usually has a density of at least 2000 kg/m³ to 2400 kg/m³. This means that rammed earth elements which are prefabricated can quickly weigh 500 kg and more. It is therefore important to keep the accessibility of the respective installation locations of the rammed earth elements as simple as possible on the construction site. This also includes avoiding different levels as far as possible and checking access for semi-trailer trucks or lifting with a construction site crane.
Otherwise the construction technique with rammed earth does not generally involve more waste or dirt than other, conventional construction techniques.

What is the U-value of rammed earth?

Depending on its composition (see recipe), rammed earth can have different U-values. In addition, there is also a dynamic U-value, e.g. if the moisture conditions in the rammed earth change.
The U-value can be found in the literature from 1.00 W/m²K to 2.970 W/m²K. However, the calculated U-value usually differs drastically from the measured U-value in the use of rammed earth buildings.

06

Welche Feuerwiderstandsklasse erreicht Stampflehm?

What fire resistance class does rammed earth achieve?

According to the recognised earthen building regulations in Germany, rammed earth achieves a wall thickness of 25.0 cm and above - the classifications F90A. This applies to massively rammed walls which are classified according to DIN 4102 T4 (1994).
