Clay treasure school project

Those who understand the earth recognize far more in it than just dirt; they discover a treasure.

What does earth smell like when it takes shape?
In the 2024/25 school year, nine classes from the Sebastianplatz elementary school (grades 1 to 4) explored questions relating to spatial planning, urban development and sustainable construction and their own ideas about living together as part of a joint art project. Based on a map of the school’s surroundings, they modeled buildings, condensed and expanded them in a playful way to create new city models – and asked questions such as: Where are public spaces located? What does a good place to live need? This allowed them to experience their surroundings from a new perspective and learn more about themselves and living together in their community through creative activity.
In exploring the topic of “color”, the children discovered the diverse colors of the earth, created with different earth colors and natural materials and researched animals that live in and with the earth. They modeled, shaped and told stories – with a special focus on the connection between people, nature and built space. Each child was able to contribute their own ideas and each class developed their own approach to the material and topic.
In exploring the theme of “color”, the children discovered the many different colors of the earth, created with earth colors and natural materials, and researched animals that live in and with the earth.
In the Atelier of Erden Schule in Schlins, they eagerly modeled, designed and built – with clay, earth colors and other natural materials. Whether city models, landscapes, earth caves or sculptures: each class developed their own contributions, which were shown in a joint exhibition at the end of the school year.

The project was funded by the city of Feldkirch and Double Check. Realized and accompanied by Monja Krötz and Anna-Pia Rauch. Images by Barbara Marte commissioned by Double Check.
